I am so excited to be traveling to Boston this fall. I love history. Last summer, my family and I went to Corsica. We decided to go down the self catering route and chose from one of many luxury apartments in Corsica available for rent. My husband, son and I just came from a vacation to the Holy Land. My husband and I are both Christians, and it is our intention to raise our son (and other future children) in the name of our faith. When we were on our vacation, we decided to join an Israel tour that focused on the Christian teachings. My son enjoyed it so much. As a matter of fact, he was so engaged that he kept asking our guide intelligent questions. Good thing the other participants found that as a crucial part of the tour instead of annoying. We are now back in the States, but he still cannot stop talking about our experiences in the tour. Throughout my life, I’m aware of three things that I’m deadly afraid of. The kind of fear that gets worse in my imagination than anything. The kind of fear that my rational mind can not understand. And for the longest time, deep inside, I want to face these fears of mind.

Those three things are:

- Fear of height

- Fear of the deep

- Fear of wriggly insects

Me vs Height

It took me being unemployed for a year, and being ridiculously bored out of my mind, to finally decide to do something about my fear of height. I enrolled in a beginner rock climbing class at a local gym and quickly discovered a little trick: As keep either looking straight or up, I’m actually enjoying this.

As long as I keep looking anywhere but down, I love, as in capital L- love, the way my body moves on the wall. Which confirms my suspicion that we, humans, are so not made to be sitting down 8 hours a day in a cubicle. But to be out in nature, climbing, walking (but not swimming, more on that later).

And when I do have to look down, I found that focusing just past the ground, it blurs my nemesis into oblivion. My palms stop sweating, my heart stops racing, and I can continue to climb. And last summer, I climbed Cathedral Peak in Yosemite.

Me vs Wriggly Insects

One night, my husband was preparing dinner in the kitchen when he noticed two small, wriggly entities on the stove top when there were none before.

As he peered closer, 2 more appeared. Then 1 more. Then another one.

It slowly dawned on us that LIVE, WRIGGLING MAGGOTs were falling down onto our stove top.

To say that I was hysterical was being nice. I refused to be within 3 feet of the kitchen. I firmly believed that those maggots are attracted to fear and as I was standing there contemplating that there was no way I would spend another night in that place, they were plotting to surround me and take me by surprise.

When we discovered that the kitchen has been breached and we started finding the unmentionables all over our apartment, I lost it.

We moved out of the apartment 2 days after.

P.S. So what happened was, a squirrel fell into the ventilation pipe and died. It was what the unmentionables were feasting on. We didn’t know how it died and why we didn’t smell it beforehand.

Me vs The Deep (part 1)

When I told my husband that I enrolled both of us in Ocean Kayaking 101, I really didn’t know what I was thinking.

Oh wait.

I remember.

We were planning our trip to Alaska, and I had a picture of us kayaking peacefully among giant icebergs.

It looks so serene, the water so placid and calm. And you’re wearing a life vest. What’s the worst that can happen?

Well, the picture I had in my mind definitely doesn’t warn me that:

1. We’d be held in place to the kayak and if/when we roll, we have to detach while being UPSIDE DOWN in the water.

2. The kayaks are not a stable entity, but a finicky, rolling, piece of plastic that seems to always in danger of capsizing.

We spent the first half of the class in the university swimming pool – which I did okay with. And I thought, well, this ain’t so bad.

Then on the last day, we went to the ocean.

Unlike the swimming pool, the water wasn’t still. Unlike the swimming pool, I can’t see the bottom. Unlike the swimming pool, I knew there were…’things’… swimming underneath my kayaks.

I have to say that I’m pretty proud of myself for not hightailing out from the beach. I actually forced myself to sit down, attach the skirt, and pushed myself onto the rolling, unknown, expanse of black water.

I was terrified when I got accidentally splashed with water. I was terrified I accidentally bumped another kayak. I was terrified when hubby’s kayak got too close and I was terrified when it got too far.

I was even more terrified when our instructor told us to practise one of the ‘wet exits’ out there.

But apparently I wasn’t the only one. I looked around and saw that I wasn’t the only one thinking that our instructor request for us to willingly capsize our kayak was not what a sane person would make, and thus rightly need to be ignored.

He repeated his request. Again, everyone pretended not to hear.

My husband came to the rescue. Being a very good swimmer, he had no qualms about the whole thing. He took one for the class while the rest of us hung our heads in shame while we rowed back to the shore.

Of course when we got to Alaska, we ended up not going on any kayaking trips. We did, however, enjoyed a beautiful week of backpacking Denali National Park and a hike to see a glacier up close.

Me vs The Deep (part 2)

My next self-improvement project in preparation for our around the world trip is to learn how to scuba dive. Now, for those who do not know me, you might not know that I can’t swim.

If you throw me in a swimming pool, I can flail and thrash around some limbs to get myself to the shore.

But ask me to tread water and I sink like a rock.

Which is a problem because treading water for 10 minutes is a requirement before they even allow you to take the Scuba class.

That, and swimming 200 m.

Ugh. Big problem.

I’m curious to know how this battle will end.

In the end, sometimes to conquer your fear you just have to imagine the rewards that come afterwards.

So that’s my current score against some of my biggest fears. What is yours?

It is quite difficult when I have to choose one single mug from my fabulous coffee travel mugs collection. I tend to like them all, but the one with a little pink kitten it will be always my favorite. I received it one Christmas, two years ago from my little nephew. He said it was the perfect present for his favorite auntie. He is adorable. I can’t spend a day without drinking coffee and a travel mug is all I need. I can take it with me everywhere I go and every time I want. I am confident the coffee will not pour out of the cup because it is very well designed and very secure.
